Universal Credit
A monthly payment for people on a low income, out of work, or unable to work, that can include support for housing, children and health conditions.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Support for people aged 16 to State Pension age with a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability, and difficulties with daily living and/or getting around.
Carer's Allowance & Support
Support for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial care needs, plus wider carer's support beyond the Allowance itself.
Council Tax Reduction & Support
Help towards your Council Tax bill if you're on a low income or claiming benefits — but the amount and the rules depend entirely on where you live.
Child Benefit
Money for anyone responsible for bringing up a child under 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training).
Attendance Allowance
Support for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of a physical or mental disability.
Pension Credit
A means-tested top-up for people over State Pension age on a low income — often worth checking even if you think savings or a partner's income might rule you out.
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Support if a health condition or disability limits your ability to work — most new claims are for 'New Style' ESA, based on National Insurance contributions rather than income.
Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
Support for children under 16 with a disability or health condition — most adults now claim PIP instead, but existing adult DLA claimants can continue on it in some cases.
Housing Support
Help with rent or housing costs — for most working-age renters this now comes through Universal Credit rather than a standalone claim.
Other Support
Support that doesn't fit neatly into one named benefit — local welfare assistance, cost-of-living help, and other schemes worth knowing about.
